Rachel Sugar Flower Wedding Cake (Unframed)

Each cake design is a journey into the imagination and in some ways, perhaps, a portrait of the mind of its maker.

Rachel's something blue. Sugar flower wedding cake for Rachel and Jason today on a gorgeous mountaintop in Emmalena, Kentucky. For Rachel, we went round and round about what to include and one of the first things she said was what about a blue cake ? To which I loved of course! Some of the sugar flowers include peonies, sweet peas, scabious, butterfly bush, ranunculus, moth orchids, tweedia, fritillaria persica, allium, foxglove. There are 528 petals on the ranunculus alone. On the fritillaria persica there are 72 sugar blooms that make up the stalks. 432 handmade and individually applied sugar petals and 261 handmade sugar stamens are in the center of each of those blossoms. Everything is handmade and it turns into hundreds of petals, stamens, or centers quickly. The stats of things like this can seem boring, so I'll go with what someone wrote me when they said they could see the love I was putting into it for Rachel. And I wouldn't do it if I didn't. I have had visions all day of her playing house in the bar at my wedding in Whitesburg and dancing in my hallway at home. I'm proud of so much of the painting on this cake and the color palette is kindly dreamy. I never quit. I keep going. Down to the last second and I was fixing broken petals and making sugar moth orchids. Once you see a design going somewhere you want to keep going and I went a solid 18 -20 hours yesterday or more, I think.
