Each cake design is a journey into the imagination and in some ways, perhaps, a portrait of the mind of its maker.

Ok girls! Let’s try this again. For the cake, we went with the scale we have discussed feeding 201. The colors of the cake were pulled from the Beyoncé image of the Putnam and Putnam boat floral shoot. The aspect of her being in red surrounded by pale peaches and lavenders and then the inky dark blue of the water really spoke to me and all three of us. By making the fondant background color the color of the cake, I think the flowers will really stand out more than they would on another color. Kind of like the darker backgrounds in old still life paintings. The burgundies, reds and purples were borrowed from the Frances Palmer picture you both loved. I love how the dahlia petals in that image are romantically poetic and dripping more so. Also love the spikier dahlias and the way they are upside down in that image and have copied that into the design here along with the dark purple flower. And the red ball dahlia and dark purple zinnia. For the elements that I designed with I went with another Frances Palmer image that you liked. It had used everything seasonal in Frances’ garden essentially at that time, because that’s how she makes her arrangements. Clipping different things that are in bloom out there at the same time. So, that really establishes a sense of place. So, for that reason I have also used dahlias. A Koko Loko variety. A Laguna and some unknown ones that I described above. For the zinnias I used one called queen red lime. Mom and I grew it from seed in the garden and it’s also present in the Beyoncé and other Putnam and Putnam boat images. Raspberries and their leaves in varying peach tones are built around the base. I think this will show a lot of detail and be interesting. And you don’t notice it much but there are just a few tiny unripe tomatoes tucked behind the raspberry branches. The raspberry leaves are used a few places throughout. I also used a light purple salvia. Just because the boat Beyoncé image really has a lot of lavenders and peaches surrounding her. And then I borrowed too one king protea. Which is a touch more exotic. Otherwise kept it totally the elements in the Frances picture just different varieties and colors. And then to finish out around the elements there is nicotiana the tobacco flower. It smells great and just has the cutest little blooms. They have them at nurseries here right now, I’m sure. But anyway, that’s the concept so let me know what you think! You should have all the reference images from yesterday.
